Hunter B. Andrews

Hampton native Hunter B. Andrews (1921-2005) was a towering figure in Virginia's modern political history often referred to as a "Champion for Education" during his thirty-two year career as Virginia State Senator. Former Chairman of the Hampton School Board, Andrews understood the educational potential of television and in 1961 founded the Commonwealth's first non-commercial educational television station–WHRO, in partnership with his friend Vincent J. Thomas of Norfolk. His leadership is recognized through the January 2021 renaming of the WHRO Leadership Circle of donors to become the Hunter B. Andrews Society.

Now, more than ever, public media is an important part of your personal media landscape bringing a non-profit, non-commercial, service oriented approach to improving the lives of millions in eastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina residents. Please consider joining the Hunter B. Andrews Society and know that every day your support is helping to make a difference in the lives of more than millions of Hampton Roads and northeastern North Carolina residents as well as 95,000 students and teachers who receive WHRO Public Media's educational programs, teacher training and online courses every year.
